You've probably said "a school uniform" - but which one? It probably depends on when you attended school, and which school you attended.
School uniforms weren't enforced at Wingham Rural District School until the 1950s, yet in the past 60 years, as one school became three, there has been a variety of school uniforms which attempted to combine practicality with the style of the day.
Do you remember the short, tight, Black Watch Tartan skirts that the senior Wingham High girls wore not long after the school first opened? How about the dark navy blue box-pleat tunics that from Wingham Public School in the early 1970s? There was a light blue sports tunic for the high school, and even earlier, a dark blue tunic at the WRDS in the 1950s.
The boys didn't miss out either. Before polo shirts, boys were expected to wear plain grey button up shirts to school - senior high school boys were allowed to wear white button-up shirts with their grey shorts trousers and black shoes. Red and blue striped ties were optional, except for formal occasions and long grey school socks had blue and red stripes around the top: very spiffy!
As part of our Sesquicentenary Celebrations, we're putting together a collection of all of the past school uniforms, but that's not as easy as it sounds! If you have any old items of school uniform from Wingham High School, Wingham Brush Public School, Wingham Public School or Wingham Rural District School, please contact the Sesquicentenary Committee by email: winghameducation150@gmail.com.
